Niko's birthday week began with bath/shower night.
Two fresh and clean children to start of a week of celebrations.
The next morning we listened to Niko's special 11th birthday announcement on our local am radio station. Willow was unsettled from the beginning. The streamers had her on alert and unable to start eating and the birthday song threw her over the edge into tears. This is not unusual for her. She can pretend with the song but as soon as it is a "real" celebration she gets upset. I think she finds it hard to feel the real emotions of a celebration, because she finds it hard to feel vulnerable; that is my theory anyway.
During snack time at school Niko shared brown rice crispy treats with flax meal that Yiayia made. They were actually quite delicious. That night we had a quick take out dinner with Niko's favorite Thai food. It was quick due it also being karate night, but it was nice of Nana, Aunt Mary, Yiayia and Papa to join in the special meal.
Tofu triangles, chicken satay, and Tom Yum soup...all Niko's favorites. He opened cards that had money gifts which is a pretty cool gift when you are 11. Also, our friend Shannon send him two audio books as Niko is a huge fan of listening to books. (He's just about done with Lord of the Rings.)
Willow enjoyed sharing Papa's chicken and veggie pad thai until...the birthday song. Then she cried and refused to sit at the table. My birthday is next and maybe we should try Jingle Bells or Five Little Monkeys as the special song instead.
After karate they both enjoyed a little snuggling.
The next night we had a no frills birthday celebration with neighborhood friends. I love Willow sitting in that big chair with a mouth full of stringy cheese.
Niko carries that crossbow with him everywhere, a birthday gift from Yiayia and Papa. We had to remove Willow from the celebration before the birthday song over the candle lit in an ice cream sandwich.
He sure loves that crossbow. Also, he was extremely excited about the bat house from Uncle Miles, Aunt Monica and Cousin Mateo (Tribeca too).
